Iran’s parliament is considering halting all cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, citing political bias and a failure to uphold technical neutrality. The move comes amid heightened regional tensions and recent attacks on Iranian nuclear sites.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf announced on Monday that the Islamic Consultative Assembly is reviewing a draft bill to suspend collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), criticizing the organization for abandoning its professional mandate.

“The world clearly witnessed that the IAEA failed to uphold any of its commitments and has become a political tool,” Qalibaf stated during a parliamentary session. He emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program is entirely peaceful, declaring that “Iran has no plans for non-peaceful activities.”

The IAEA, tasked with verifying the peaceful nature of nuclear programs worldwide, has come under fire from Iranian officials who claim the agency is being manipulated by Western powers.

Qalibaf explained that lawmakers “are considering passing a bill to suspend Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA until Tehran receives tangible guarantees of the professional conduct of this United Nations organization.” MP Ruhollah Motefakerzadeh confirmed the legislative push, stating that the bill demands “objective guarantees” of the agency’s neutrality.

“We in the parliament are seeking to pass a bill that would suspend Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA until we have objective guarantees of the professional behavior of this international organization,” Motefakerzadeh said.

Qalibaf also condemned recent U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, asserting that such actions reflect “the Israeli regime’s strategic failure to achieve its goals.” However, he warned that Tehran “will not tolerate” these aggressions.

He directly warned former U.S. President Donald Trump, holding him responsible for the escalation: “The Islamic Republic will give a response that will make President Donald Trump regret the act of aggression against the Iranian nation.”
