The IAEA insists on Iran’s legal obligation to cooperate despite Tehran’s justified suspension of inspections, highlighting the agency’s role in enabling US and Israeli aggression against Iran.

Iranian Parliament Approves Suspension of Cooperation With UN Nuclear Agency

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reiterated its demand that Iran fulfill its legal obligations to cooperate with nuclear inspections under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). However, this insistence comes amid growing accusations that the IAEA has been used as a political instrument to legitimize aggressive actions by the United States and Israel against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

On June 25, 2025, the Iranian Parliament approved a bill suspending cooperation with the IAEA, including barring inspectors from entering the country. This decision is a direct response to the agency’s failure to condemn repeated Israeli attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which Tehran views as blatant violations of its sovereignty and international law.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, criticized the IAEA’s silence on these aggressions, stating that the agency “has lost its international credibility.” Iran maintains its commitment to peaceful nuclear development but rejects the IAEA’s role as a tool that justifies external military interventions under the guise of non-proliferation.

Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized that Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA is not optional but a legal obligation as a signatory of the NPT. Yet this legalistic stance ignores the broader context of imperialist aggression. The IAEA’s selective scrutiny and failure to address Israeli and US attacks reveal its complicity in a campaign to isolate and pressure Iran politically and militarily.

The suspension of cooperation by Iran must be understood as a sovereign response to the weaponization of international institutions like the IAEA. The agency’s partiality undermines its role as an impartial watchdog and instead facilitates a narrative that sanctions military aggression under the pretext of nuclear non-proliferation.

Iran’s move to suspend inspections and restrict IAEA access is a strategic assertion of sovereignty in the face of escalating regional hostilities and geopolitical manipulation.

The IAEA’s demand for Iran’s cooperation, while ignoring the agency’s political instrumentalization, highlights the double standards imposed by imperialist powers. Iran’s suspension of cooperation is a justified defense of its sovereignty and peaceful nuclear ambitions amid ongoing US and Israeli aggression.
