German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed strong criticism of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, stating that the escalating airstrikes are no longer comprehensible and cannot be justified.

Speaking at a press conference in Finland, Merz declared that Israeli military actions in Gaza lack any clear logic, marking a shift in Germany’s stance on the conflict.

“I am also not among those who said it first … But it seemed and seems to me that the time has come when I must say publicly, (that) what is currently happening is no longer comprehensible,” Merz stated.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul echoed Merz’s concerns, warning that Germany’s support for Israel’s security must not be manipulated to justify warfare in Gaza.

Since Israel unilaterally ended the ceasefire on March 18, Gaza has endured intensified bombardments, killing at least 3,901 Palestinians and injuring 11,088 others. Medical teams reported that, in the past 24 hours alone, 79 bodies and 163 wounded civilians were admitted to Gaza hospitals.

The Israeli blockade continues to prevent the entry of humanitarian aid, worsening the crisis. Since October 2023, Israeli strikes have killed 54,056 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 123,129 others. Additionally, at least 10,000 remain buried under rubble, unaccounted for.

More than two million people have been forcibly displaced, with most trapped in the overcrowded southern city of Rafah, marking the largest Palestinian mass exodus since the 1948 Nakba.
