After assuming the rotating presidency of the Arab League, Iraq’s President Abdul Latif Rashid expressed his support for the Palestinian resistance and therefore rejected any attempt at forced displacement. He also called for urgent action to strengthen stability in the region in the face of critical challenges facing his countries.
For his part, the Iraqi prime minister, Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani, presented 18 proposals to strengthen cooperation among Arab nations. The official also took the opportunity to denounce the war of extermination by the occupying forces in Gaza territory, which was described as an unprecedented offensive.
Similarly, al-Sudani condemned the attacks on southern Lebanon and expressed Iraq’s support for Beirut’s regional role. He reiterated his Government’s commitment to the stability of Syria, indicating that Baghdad will offer its capabilities to contribute to the pacification of the neighbouring country.
In the same line, Egyptian president, Abdelfatah al-Sisi, reiterated that, if Israel succeeds in reaching peace agreements with all the Arab countries, “global peace in the Middle East will be unattainable unless a Palestinian state is established according to the norms of international resolutions.”
In addition, he urged the US President, Donald Trump, to “establish peace,” to make the maximum efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as an initial step towards launching a serious political process for a final and just solution for the people of Gaza.
The Foreign Minister of Djibouti, Abdulkader Hussein Omar, denounced the situation of the Palestinian people in Gaza and stated that “it is not only an aggression, but a shame for humanity”. The same line was taken by the Tunisian diplomatic leader, Mohamed Ali Nafti. He described the act as a violation of international resolutions, which defies all human and ethical norms.
“Our position is firm in supporting the Palestinian people to regain all their rights and establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital,” he emphasized.
For his part, the Mauritanian Foreign Minister expressed his Government’s concern about the continuing catastrophic situation in Gaza and called on the international community to assume its responsibility in this regard. And Saudi Arabia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Adel al-Jubeir, insisted on the need to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and rejected any displacement of Palestinians.
“We reaffirm the need to expand joint Arab cooperation and continue on the path of development that meets the aspirations of our peoples,” said Al-Jubeir.
On the other hand, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that “the world, the region and above all the peoples of Palestine and Israel cannot afford to see the two-state solution disappear before our eyes. That goal has never been more imperative or more distant.”
Meanwhile, the president of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Mahmoud Abbas, called on Saturday the 22 member countries of the Arab League from Baghdad to adopt a plan to end the war in Gaza. His initiative includes the surrender of control and laying down of arms by the Hamas resistance movement.
Abbas’s purpose is for the State of Palestine to assume its civil and security responsibilities in the Gaza Strip, “restructuring the Palestinian security services in Gaza on a professional basis, with Arab and international assistance.”
Furthermore, it demands a permanent ceasefire, as well as the release of all hostages and prisoners, guarantees of humanitarian aid flow and the total withdrawal of the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip.
