France will begin airlifting 40 tons of humanitarian supplies to Gaza this week, as mounting international pressure urges Israel to reopen land access points for life-saving aid amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced that four separate flights, each carrying 10 tons of humanitarian aid, will be delivered to Gaza in coordination with Jordanian authorities. “In close cooperation with the Jordanian authorities, we will carry out four flights transporting 10 tons of supplies each to Gaza,” Barrot told BFMTV.

Barrot also drew attention to the 52 tons of aid currently stuck just a few kilometers from Gaza due to ongoing restrictions. “It is crucial that Israel reopens the land crossings,” he stressed, underscoring the urgency of unimpeded humanitarian access.

The French initiative follows President Emmanuel Macron’s recent pledge that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. The announcement adds diplomatic weight to Paris’ position amid a protracted conflict that has left over 60,000 Palestinians dead and more than 145,800 injured in the last 21 months, according to figures from local health sources.

Since mid-March, following a brief ceasefire earlier this year, Israel has resumed its military offensive, citing Hamas’ intransigence. The Israeli government also halted electricity supply to Gaza’s main desalination plant and blocked humanitarian aid truck convoys.

International outcry forced the Israeli government to partially reopen aid channels in recent weeks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has since designated the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) as the official distributor of incoming supplies. However, humanitarian organizations operating on the ground have criticized the move, labeling the GHF as an unprofessional entity with close political ties to Israeli authorities.

As France steps up its direct assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, the broader international community continues to grapple with the dual challenge of addressing urgent humanitarian needs while seeking a sustainable resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
