Oman played the role of indirect mediator throughout the negotiations.

On Friday, Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi announced that the fifth round of negotiations between Iran and the United States concluded in Rome, with limited but inconclusive progress.

“We hope to clarify the remaining issues in the coming days, to allow us to proceed towards the common goal of reaching a sustainable and honorable agreement,” he said.

The discussions, held at the Omani Embassy in Italy, lasted over three hours and were led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff. Oman played the role of indirect mediator throughout the negotiations.

Ongoing tensions between the two nations have centered on uranium enrichment. The Trump administration has reiterated its demand for Iran to halt all uranium enrichment activities, but Tehran rejected the notion of “zero enrichment” and demanded the lifting of economic sanctions.

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the latest U.S.-Iran negotiations round “was one of the most professional and complex so far. He emphasized that while the US now better understands Iran’s positions, the talks remain too intricate to resolve in just a few rounds,” the Cradle reported.

“Araghchi confirmed that Oman’s foreign minister has presented proposals aimed at removing obstacles, which will be reviewed in Tehran before any response is given,” it added.

The Iranian diplomat also “reiterated that Iran will not compromise on its red lines and that the next round of negotiations will follow internal consultations on the Omani proposals.”
