Eleven Sudanese migrants and a Libyan driver were killed in a fatal collision between their vehicle and a truck 90 kilometers north of Kufra, Libyan authorities confirmed.
The victims included three women and two children, while a 65-year-old man and his 10-year-old son were injured in the crash.
This tragedy follows another deadly incident earlier this month, when seven Sudanese migrants died after their vehicle broke down, leaving 34 stranded for days in the desert.
Libya, plunged into chaos after the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, has become a major transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.
The country’s porous borders with Chad, Niger, Sudan, Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia have enabled human traffickers to exploit instability, smuggling migrants into Libya in hopes of reaching Europe.
Since Sudan’s civil war erupted in 2023, thousands have fled to Libya, escaping violence, displacement, and famine, as the conflict continues to devastate the region.
