Five inmates were killed and 29 others injured when a routine contraband search at Bouaké prison escalated into violent clashes, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

Prisoners reacted with hostility as security officers conducted a scheduled search for illegal items on Tuesday. The public prosecutor, Abel Nangbelé Yeo, stated that officers were attacked with clubs, machetes, and blunt objects, forcing them to fire warning shots to retreat.

Contraband Seized

During the operation, officers confiscated blocks of cannabis, Tramadol tablets, mobile phones, and three grenades, highlighting ongoing security concerns within the facility.

Human Rights Concerns

Ivory Coast’s prison system has faced criticism from human rights groups and the UN, citing overcrowding, poor hygiene, inadequate food and water, and widespread violence.

Earlier this year, a prisoner died during an escape attempt at Bouaké prison, further raising concerns about conditions and security failures.
