Strengthening Ties: Díaz-Canel Meets Xi Jinping in Moscow
This meeting not only highlighted the excellent state of relations between Cuba and China but also marked the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations. During the meeting, both leaders discussed strategies to deepen cooperation between their respective parties and governments.
Commemorating History: Participation in the Great Patriotic War Parade
Díaz-Canel’s final day in Russia was marked by participation in an emotional military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in the Great Patriotic War. Through his social media, the Cuban leader expressed his honor at sharing the platform with the heroes of that era and with world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Díaz-Canel also held discussions with Putin, where they reviewed bilateral agreements and discussed plans to strengthen political, economic, and commercial cooperation between Cuba and Russia.
In this context, Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy head of the Russian Security Council, emphasized the importance of the ties between both countries, describing them as a solid foundation of friendship and mutual respect.
A Tribute to Fidel Castro: Honors and Diplomatic Engagements in Moscow
In addition to his official meetings, Díaz-Canel paid tribute to Fidel Castro by laying a floral offering at his monument in Moscow. In a symbolic gesture, Gennady Zyuganov, the secretary of the Communist Party of Russia, awarded him a commemorative medal for the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.
The visit also included the inauguration of an exhibition celebrating the restoration of diplomatic relations between Russia and Cuba, as well as meetings with members of the Cuban state mission in Moscow. A highlight was his visit to the Moskvich automobile factory and his tribute to Liberator Simón Bolívar alongside Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The Cuban president’s tour began in St. Petersburg, where he honored the defenders of the city during the Nazi blockade and explored scientific and biotechnological research centers. This trip not only reaffirms historical ties between Cuba and Russia but also underscores Havana’s interest in strengthening its relations with emerging powers like China while continuing its collaboration with traditional allies like Russia.
In summary, Díaz-Canel’s visit to Russia was a milestone in Cuban diplomacy, reflecting a renewed commitment to international cooperation and strengthening strategic relationships in a changing global context.
