The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) summoned the U.S. chargé d’affaires on Friday, protesting his “interventionist and unfriendly behavior” since assuming his post in Havana.
According to Alejandro García del Toro, Director of Bilateral Affairs for the United States, the diplomat’s actions violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and contradicted the bilateral agreement on the restoration of diplomatic ties.
In a formal Note of Protest, Cuba condemned the U.S. official’s alleged encouragement of Cuban citizens to commit serious offenses, including actions against constitutional order and support for foreign interests. García del Toro emphasized that diplomatic immunity does not grant a representative license to undermine the sovereignty of the country where they are accredited.
Cuba further rebuked the chargé d’affaires for his public statements on national hero José Martí, calling them manipulative and insulting. The Cuban government asserted that Martí’s independence and anti-imperialist convictions formed the foundation of Cuban national identity, warning of the historical threat of U.S. domination.
During the meeting, García del Toro handed the diplomat a copy of Martí’s unfinished letter to his Mexican friend Manuel Mercado, reaffirming Cuba’s commitment to its independence and national sovereignty.
