teleSUR frees us from the tyranny of the capitalist algorithm and encourages critical thinking, IICS stated.

Cuba held tribute to teleSUR on the 20th anniversary of its founding on July 24, a date that also coincides with the 242nd birthday of Latin American liberator Simon Bolivar.

The ceremony, organized in Havana by the Institute of Information and Social Communication (IICS), was filled with political symbolism and historical memory.

The IICS aimed to highlight the role the multimedia platform has played as a reference point for counter-hegemonic communication in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“The challenge today is to have many media outlets like teleSUR that help free us from the tyranny of the capitalist algorithm and foster critical thinking,” said the event’s host, referring to the channel’s role in shaping a Latin American perspective in contrast to dominant global narratives.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel’s text reads, “teleSUR was born 20 years ago, on the Liberator’s birthday. Since that day, the people of Our America have had their own voice and image to tell their truths. Congratulations to you, dear Patricia Villegas, and to your entire brave team. Thank you on behalf of Cuba.”

IICS President Alfonso Noya presented a certificate of recognition to teleSUR’s team of correspondents in Havana. Yuzaima Cardona, director of Cuban radio, awarded the commemorative seal marking the centennial of Cuban radio. And Cuban television also presented a special distinction to teleSUR.

The tribute to the multimedia platform took place on the eve of Cuba’s National Rebellion Day, drawing a symbolic connection between the country’s independence legacy, the July 26, 1953 uprising, and the communications project launched by Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. That initiative gave birth to teleSUR as a tool for integration and informational sovereignty.

IICS Vice President Onelio Castillo delivered the event’s keynote speech, followed by musical performances by trova singer Ariel Diaz and the unveiling of a commemorative stained-glass artwork representing teleSUR’s first 20 years as “a firm and fair voice.”
