This agreement was the outcome of a meeting between Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and Qiu Xiaoqi, the Chinese government’s special representative for Latin American affairs, who has been visiting the Caribbean nation for more than 10 days.
Qiu said his visit aims to “deepen understanding of the situation in Cuba to actively promote bilateral relations.”
He also described the island as a good “friend, partner and brother” to Beijing, and stressed that the next step is to “implement” the agreements made during the most recent meeting between the presidents of both countries, which took place in Moscow in May.
At that meeting, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Cuba-China ties had entered a new, stronger phase and called for deeper cooperation. Rodriguez, for his part, expressed gratitude for China’s support and advocated for increased collaboration on multiple fronts.
Cuba and China established diplomatic relations 65 years ago and currently maintain strong ties, largely driven by political alignment between Beijing and Havana.
In recent years, China has supported Cuba through cooperation efforts that include multi-billion-dollar loans, substantial donations of food and medical supplies, and technical and financial assistance for the island’s transition to solar energy.
