Colombian House of Representatives Passes President Petro’s Pension Reform
In a significant diplomatic move, a group of Colombian lawmakers from the government coalition has sent a formal letter to the Ethics Committee of the US House of Representatives. The letter requests an exhaustive investigation and, if necessary, sanctions against US Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, María Elvira Salazar, and Carlos Antonio Giménez for alleged actions of interference in Colombia’s internal affairs.
The Colombian signatories express concern that the conduct attributed to the US lawmakers—specifically, meetings with former Colombian Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva and public statements by Congresswoman Salazar, could, if confirmed, constitute interference in Colombia’s internal matters and potentially harm bilateral diplomatic relations.
They base their request on reports indicating that US Representatives Díaz-Balart and Giménez met with Leyva to discuss actions contrary to Colombia’s constitutional order, and that Salazar made public statements that could be interpreted as attempts to delegitimize President Gustavo Petro and the democratically elected government.
Upholding Ethics and Non-Intervention
The letter, signed by Carmen Ramírez Boscán (Pacto Histórico), Antonio José Correa Jiménez (Partido de la U), León Fredy Muñoz Lopera (Partido Verde), Luis Alberto Albán Urbano (Partido Comunes), David Alejandro Toro Ramírez (Pacto Histórico), Leider Alexandra Vásquez Ochoa (Pacto Histórico), Sandra Ramírez Lobo Silva (Partido Comunes), and Julián Gallo Cubillos (Partido Comunes), reaffirms the commitment to mutual respect and the peaceful resolution of controversies between nations.
The lawmakers stress the importance of the principle of non-intervention, as enshrined in Article 19 of the OAS Charter, and urge the US Ethics Committee to determine if any violations of parliamentary conduct codes occurred and to apply appropriate sanctions if infractions are confirmed.
