Diplomat Guo confirms that China hopes that the parties will exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue.
On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China will maintain a “fair and impartial position” in the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

“Cambodia and Thailand are close neighbors to each other, and also friends of China. Peace and good neighborliness are in the common interest of both parties,” Guo said.
His comments came in response to a statement made earlier Monday by Thai interim Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who named China, the United States, and Malaysia as countries that “have intervened to help” facilitate talks between Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
The two nations have been locked in a territorial dispute along their shared border since July 24. Guo did not deny that claim but stopped short of confirming any direct role in organizing the dialogue.
He said only that Beijing “maintains close communication” with the parties involved and will continue to “play a constructive role in promoting a cease-fire.”
“China values constructive initiatives and hopes that the parties will exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue,” the Chinese diplomat concluded.
The meeting in Kuala Lumpur — hosted by Malaysia in its capacity as the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) — aims to achieve an immediate cease-fire between Thailand and Cambodia.
The talks follow several days of clashes and bombings that have resulted in casualties and increased regional tensions. The conflict erupted on July 24 in an escalation that has already left at least 34 people dead, forced thousands to flee, and involved the use of fighter jets, rockets and cluster munitions.
