The country is open to cooperating with the international community in negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, provided there is consensus among the involved parties.
“China supports all efforts conducive to peace,” Mao said when asked about the phone calls U.S. President Donald Trump had with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“We support direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine and a political solution to the crisis,” the Chinese spokesperson added, reiterating Beijing’s hope that all parties reach a “just, lasting and binding” agreement.
Regarding the possibility of China participating in the negotiations being prepared by Moscow and Kyiv, Mao indicated that Beijing is willing, “depending on the will of the parties,” to cooperate and continue playing “a constructive role” in resolving the crisis and achieving lasting peace.
On Monday, following phone calls with Putin and Zelenskyy, the U.S. president said Russia and Ukraine had committed to immediately begin negotiations toward a cease-fire and an end to the war.
Putin also confirmed his willingness to work with Ukraine on a roadmap for a possible peace agreement, although he did not agree to an unconditional truce.
For its part, the Zelenskyy government said it was awaiting details on Russia’s conditions and proposed that future talks could be held at the Vatican, in Switzerland or in Türkiye.
