China denounced on Wednesday what it described as an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza, urging Israel to end its military operations and lift the siege to allow humanitarian aid to reach civilians.

Speaking at a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun expressed Beijing’s “deep concern” over the deteriorating situation in Gaza and demanded that “all parties involved, especially Israel, immediately halt military actions, lift the blockade and siege, and fully restore humanitarian access to prevent a deeper crisis.”

Citing recent data from the World Health Organization, Guo highlighted the growing death toll caused by malnutrition, which includes 74 recorded fatalities so far this year—63 of them in July alone—among which are 25 children. “These figures are the latest evidence of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza,” Guo said, emphasizing that the international community “cannot remain indifferent” to the scale of civilian suffering.

The conflict in Gaza has persisted for 21 months, and the United Nations reports that more than one-third of the population now endures entire days without food. UN agencies issued warnings on Tuesday that Gaza is at high risk of famine, with nutrition indicators at their lowest levels since the outbreak of hostilities.

China reiterated its longstanding call for a ceasefire and full humanitarian access, stressing that the Palestinian issue remains “at the core of the Middle East question.” Guo reaffirmed Beijing’s support for the two-state solution, calling the establishment of an independent Palestinian state “the only realistic option” for achieving “comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.”

Guo also acknowledged the role of international actors such as France, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia in advancing diplomatic consensus around a two-state framework. “China is willing to work with the international community to stop the violence, ease the humanitarian crisis, and promote a political settlement that restores stability to the region,” he concluded.
