The decision is consistent with Canada’s position that the tariffs were illegal and unjustified, said PM Carney.

On Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney praised a decision by the U.S. Federal Trade Court to block the majority of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, ruling that they exceeded his authority.

In remarks delivered in the House of Commons, Carney said his administration is satisfied with the court’s decision and added that the judicial block “is consistent with Canada’s position that the tariffs were illegal and unjustified.”

In recent months, Trump’s actions have permanently damaged the relationship Canada has maintained for more than half a century with its neighbor and primary trading partner.

“We recognize that our trade relationship with the United States remains deeply threatened and impacted by equally unjustified tariffs on steel, aluminum and the automotive sector,” Carney said.

“Therefore, the top priority of the new Canadian government remains establishing a new economic and security relationship with the United States and strengthening our collaboration with reliable partners and allies around the world,” he added.

Carney, who won the Canadian federal election on April 28, has introduced a government plan focused on reducing the country’s dependence on the United States by eliminating internal trade barriers and reinforcing its defense partnership with Europe.
