Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office accuses former President Jair Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo, of instigating a U.S.-imposed trade war that includes 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods. The accusation comes amid political tensions fueled by Eduardo’s lobbying in Washington to shield his family from legal prosecution.

Brazil’s General Attorney’s Office (AGU) publicly charged Eduardo Bolsonaro this Wednesday with provoking the ongoing trade conflict initiated by the U.S. Administration under Donald Trump against Brazil. According to Jorge Messias, AGU’s chief prosecutor, Eduardo’s lobbying efforts in the United States directly contributed to the imposition of punitive tariffs that threaten to harm Brazil’s economy severely.

Messias stated that Eduardo Bolsonaro appeared at the White House advocating policies aimed at retaliating against Brazilian judicial authorities who are prosecuting the Bolsonaro family, specifically attempting to influence the U.S. to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian exports as a form of political pressure.

AGU officials raised the possibility of pursuing legal action against Eduardo Bolsonaro for “collective moral damages” arising from his actions perceived as undermining national interests. The prosecutor emphasized that if proven responsible for causing significant harm, Eduardo could be held accountable before the courts.

“Eduardo Bolsonaro went to the White House to conspire against his own country to free his father from jail,” said Messias, underscoring the conflict between personal family interests and national welfare.

The U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods effective August 1, citing what it termed a “witch hunt” against Jair Bolsonaro. Eduardo Bolsonaro, a congressman and son of the former president, has been actively lobbying in Washington to pressure the U.S. government to intervene on his family’s behalf.

This development has drawn criticism domestically, including from Brazil’s current government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which has condemned foreign interference in Brazil’s judicial processes.

Eduardo Bolsonaro’s mission has included targeting Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees investigations related to alleged coup attempts and disinformation campaigns involving the Bolsonaro family. Eduardo left Brazil from March to July 20, using his absence to mobilize U.S. support, a move that Brazilian officials regard as betraying the country’s sovereignty.

AGU’s prosecutor labeled this conduct as prioritizing private interests over Brazil’s economic stability and social welfare, noting that Eduardo’s actions directly conflict with national unity during a period of economic challenges for Brazil.
