The visit took place shortly after the conclusion of the MERCOSUR summit in Buenos Aires.
On Thursday, Brazilian President Lula da Silva visited former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez at her home in Buenos Aires, where she has been under house arrest since June 17.

The visit took place shortly after the conclusion of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) summit, during which Lula da Silva assumed the rotating presidency of the trade bloc, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
A few weeks ago, after learning of the Argentine Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Fernandez’s conviction, the Brazilian president reached out to the leftist leader to offer his support.
“I observed with satisfaction the calm and determination with which Cristina is facing this adverse situation and her decision to keep fighting. I spoke to her about the importance of staying strong in these difficult times,” he posted on social media.
The Workers’ Party leader is personally familiar with such circumstances. In 2018, Lula was convicted and imprisoned in a corruption case that barred him from running in that year’s presidential election. Some years later, however, the convictions against him were overturned.
After regaining his freedom, Lula ran in the 2022 presidential election and defeated far-right politician Jair Bolsonaro, who used his position at the time as Brazil’s president to attempt a coup and prevent Lula from taking office.
