Lula is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday at the Elysee Palace, where he is expected to advocate for France not to oppose the free trade agreement between the European Union and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR).

The two leaders will also discuss topics such as new agreements on artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and the energy transition, as well as global issues including the war in Ukraine and the genocide in Gaza.

Lula’s visit to the French capital also includes a cultural component, with several events connected to the city government’s summer activity program titled “Paris on the Seine,” in which Brazil plays a leading role.

The Brazilian president and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo will also take part in a symbolic ceremony at the new urban forest being established in the square outside City Hall.

After his time in Paris, Lula will participate in the opening day of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), which runs from June 9 to 13. Its overarching theme is “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.” .

“The Conference aims to support further and urgent action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development and identify further ways and means to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14,” the UNOC3 stated on its website.
