A U.S. intervention in Iran would have unpredictable negative consequences, the Russian diplomat warned.

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova strongly criticized Western narratives seeking to justify Israel’s military aggression against the Iranian people.

“I am sure you are aware of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement, which firmly condemns this criminal venture, fraught with catastrophic consequences for regional and global security. Attempts to justify it with imaginary nonproliferation concerns are utterly cynical,” she said.

The Russian diplomat emphasized that the current military escalation in the Middle East is the result of an “unfounded aggression against a sovereign state,” carried out in violation of the United Nations Charter.

In this regard, Zakharova warned the United States that its interference in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict could lead to uncontrollable consequences.

“We would like to especially warn Washington against military intervention in the situation, which would be an extremely dangerous step with truly unpredictable negative consequences,” she said during a news briefing on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

The Russian diplomat also criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s stance on potential short-term resolutions to the Israel-Iran conflict.

“I have always believed that the best scenario would be the overthrow of the regime by the oppressed Iranian people, if they could succeed,” the Italian leader said, according to TASS news agency.

In response, Zakharova reminded Meloni that Italy is bound by international law, which invalidates the Italian prime minister’s proposal.

“Meloni expressed the opinion that there should be a change of power in Iran through the overthrow of the current leadership by the people… Someone, please tell the head of the Italian government that on Dec. 21, 1965, by 109 votes in favor and only one abstention (the United Kingdom), the U.N. General Assembly adopted Resolution 2131 titled ‘Declaration on the Inadmissibility of Intervention in the Domestic Affairs of States and the Protection of Their Independence and Sovereignty.’ Maybe she should at least read up on what Italy voted for back then — just for interest’s sake,” the Russian diplomat said.
