However, according to a report by the Argentine Steel Chamber, in the sixth month of this year, production of the alloy registered a year-on-year increase of 16.5%.
Meanwhile, primary iron production reached 146,500 tons in June, a 26.5% drop compared to last May and a 36.8% drop compared to the same month in 2024.
Hot-rolled iron production, meanwhile, fell 20.9% compared to last May, to 262,500 tons, although the volume represented a 12.2% increase compared to June 2024, when the industry had been severely affected by a collapse in demand amid the adjustment plan implemented by Javier Milei’s government at the end of 2023.
According to the report, demand in June was partly driven by sectors such as automotive and agricultural machinery, while construction continues to show low levels of activity and “no signs of a change in trend,” while the household appliance industry is affected by imports.
“In any case, demand is expected to be slightly higher than in 2024 this year, although still below the levels achieved in previous years,” the document adds.
