Peña replaces former Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza, who took over as ALBA-TCP’s executive secretary in February 2024.
The ALBA-TCP bloc thanked Arreaza for “taking solid steps toward the goals of the strategic agenda” and for giving “new momentum” to the alliance.
The organization also congratulated Peña, adding that he is “entrusted with consolidating the proposals and tasks set forth by the heads of state and government, as well as ministerial authorities.”
The text reads, “Alba-TCP denounces the judicial coup against Cristina Fernandez in Argentina. The Bolivarian Alliance reveals that it is a political persecution ‘promoted from a judicial power subordinated to the authoritarian project of Javier Milei’.”
Peña’s appointment aims to “continue the work,” with a “special focus” on initiatives such as Agro-ALBA-TCP, ALBA-TCP Azul, and the bloc’s Development Cooperation Agency.
On June 3, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil announced the launch of an agricultural fair as part of Agro-ALBA-TCP 2025, a regional initiative designed to create “a shield for food security and sovereignty.”
During a broadcast on the state-run channel Venezolana de Television (VTV), Gil said the initiative goes beyond food products, encompassing “scientific and technological development, the supply of inputs for agroecological production,” and “everything related to machinery and agricultural mechanization.”
Founded in 2004, ALBA-TCP includes Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, and Saint Lucia.
