An Air India passenger plane carrying 242 people crashed during takeoff Thursday at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat state, northwestern India, according to preliminary reports.
The aircraft, Flight AI171 bound for London Gatwick Airport, reportedly went down shortly after initiating its takeoff roll. Air India confirmed the accident and stated it is working to collect more details.
Visuals from local television and social media showed thick black smoke rising near the airport runway. Emergency services in Ahmedabad dispatched multiple fire trucks and rescue teams to the scene to control the fire and assist passengers.
Authorities have not yet released an official casualty count as rescue operations continue. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
