Venezuela seeks to guarantee agri-food production that is protected from disruptions in global supply chains.

On Friday, Venezuelan Fisheries Minister Juan Loyo advocated for solidarity-based and sustainable food production, leveraging the agricultural, fisheries and aquaculture capabilities of the countries that are part of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP).

Venezuela is offering its land to other nations to guarantee agri-food production that “is protected from potential disruptions in global supply chains,” Loyo said during the First Joint Meeting of ALBA-TCP Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers, held in La Carlota, Miranda state.

Loyo also supported adopting a regenerative, solidarity-based, sustainable and innovative agricultural approach that harnesses aquaculture and marine resources. He emphasized that this production model involves sharing land in a spirit of solidarity, setting it apart from the agricultural practices in imperialist countries, where land is rented to ensure corporate profits.

In the context of the 2020–2030 development agenda, ALBA-TCP countries will face challenges related to rare earth exploitation, the use of artificial intelligence, and food security and sovereignty, Loyo noted.

Currently, Bolivarian authorities are carrying out a land resource survey to support AgroALBA. Venezuela has 3,358,794 hectares suitable for agriculture and 13,788,030 hectares suitable for livestock production. according to Agriculture Minister Julio Leon.

ALBA-TCP Secretary Jorge Arreaza stated that his organization continues to identify and implement effective alternatives to supply food to the people. Meanwhile, Raul Li Causi, president of the ALBA Bank, said his institution is ready to support high-impact, sustainable projects proposed by ALBA-TCP countries.

“In the face of imperialist sanctions and blockades, we respond with cooperation, planning, and joint production, rather than technocratic solutions reliant on financial institutions that serve hegemonic powers,” he said, adding that the bank is working with Venezuelan logistics companies to establish a regional maritime transport service that ensures uninterrupted flow of agricultural and fishery products.

In December 2024, during the ALBA-TCP Summit held in Caracas, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro proposed the creation of AgroALBA as a mechanism to guarantee regional food security and sovereignty. This regional integration initiative will allow countries such as Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua to counter the U.S. blockade against their peoples.
