“We learned that this boat with around 50 people shipwrecked. According to the survivors, a fire broke out, forcing people to jump into the sea. Fishermen rescued two people and brought them to Tunisia. Both claim to be the only survivors,” Alarm Phone explained.
On April 29, the organization alerted authorities that about 50 people had gone missing after setting sail from the coast of Libya in a blue wooden boat. “The Libyan Coast Guard claimed that the boat had been rescued by Italy, but we cannot confirm this information,” Alarm Phone said at the time.
The Mediterranean route is one of the busiest paths for migrants traveling from North Africa to Europe, as well as one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world, where deadly shipwrecks are commonly reported.
