According to the Chicago Police’s Serious Incident Notification system, among the dead are young people aged 18 and 16, as well as an eight-year-old boy who was grazed by a bullet.
According to local media data, from 3 to 7 July at least 109 people were shot, of whom 19 died because of their serious injuries.
“We are devastated by the recent violence that has left our city in pain and we express our sincere condolences to the families and communities affected by these recent events,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson.
“These are 19 families whose lives have changed forever,” Johnson said. “And 19 families woke up this morning without a son, without a daughter, without a mother, without a father, without an aunt, without an uncle. More than 100 people whose lives will never be the same, whose next chapter in life is the recovery and healing of this violence. These 100 people are members of families and communities”.
At the end of last Friday, the shooting count exceeded the figures for the entire four-day holiday weekend last year, when 11 people were killed and 73 injured, demonstrating a 27% increase in the rate of gun violence in Chicago.
Although authorities pledged to “ensure the safety of all residents and visitors” to the city, no arrests have yet been reported.
