On July 18, 2025, the United States government, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, announced the revocation of the U.S. visa of Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF), along with those of his closest allies on the tribunal and their immediate families.

This punitive move came hours after Moraes ordered the imposition of electronic monitoring and house arrest on former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro for his involvement in the January 2023 coup attempt.

The measure clearly signals Washington’s attempt to interfere in Brazil’s sovereign judicial process, undermining the nation’s right to self-determination and democratic justice.

Secretary Rubio framed the visa revocations as a defense of “freedom of expression,” alleging Moraes leads a “political witch hunt” against Bolsonaro, conveniently ignoring Bolsonaro’s documented attempts to destabilize Brazil’s democratic institutions. The U.S. claim harshly contradicts the STF’s role in preserving Brazil’s constitutional order and combating subversive forces threatening the Republic.

In a message posted on the social media platform X, Rubio vowed that the U.S. would hold accountable “those who censor protected expression even on U.S. soil,” an aggressive justification for meddling in another country’s judiciary, emblematic of imperialist overreach and interference.

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court’s measures against Bolsonaro, including house arrest, electronic ankle monitoring, and bans on social media and contact with foreign officials, are part of a necessary democratic defense against a right-wing coup attempt that threatened to ripple destabilization across the region.

The Federal Police investigations revealed Bolsonaro and his allies actively colluded with U.S. authorities to impose sanctions on Brazilian officials and sought interference from former U.S. President Donald Trump to derail judicial proceedings—facts that underscore the gravity of the subversion faced by Brazil’s democracy.

Prominent voices aligned with progressive and leftist movements across Latin America have condemned U.S. actions as blatant interference designed to protect far-right destabilizing forces. They affirm full support for Brazil’s sovereign judiciary and the sovereign peoples’ right to safeguard their democratic institutions free from external coercion.
