They are three civilian women – Emily Damari, Doron Steinbrecher, and Romi Gonen – who have been released after 471 days of captivity in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners, according to the agreement reached between Israel and Hamas.
“The three released hostages have arrived at the initial reception point in southern Israel, where they will meet their mothers,” stated the Israeli Army in a press release about the location set up in Reim, a few kilometers from the Gaza border, where about twenty local residents and friends of the hostages gathered to welcome them, cheering and applauding as the Army vehicles passed by.
According to the Army, medical personnel are accompanying the released hostages in Reim for an initial medical evaluation, after which they will be transferred to Sheba Hospital, on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
Ninety Palestinian prisoners are expected to be released this afternoon, most of them women and children in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
In the first phase of the pact, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a six-week ceasefire, during which time there will be a gradual exchange of 33 Israeli hostages for more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.
Negotiations for a second phase of the truce, which would complete the release of all Israeli hostages in Gaza and lay the foundations for an end to the war, will also take place during these six weeks.
