Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Tuesday that supermarket giant Walmart has confirmed its continued investment in the country and expressed interest in joining the “Mexico Plan,” a national strategy aimed at strengthening domestic industry in response to U.S. trade measures under President Donald Trump.
Sheinbaum met with Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon and his executive team at the National Palace, where they affirmed their commitment to maintaining operations in Mexico and participating in the president’s economic agenda. Sheinbaum shared the news via a brief post on social media, without offering further details.
“We met at the National Palace with Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Walmart Inc., and his team. They confirmed their investment plans in our country and their commitment to join the Mexico Plan,” Sheinbaum wrote on her X account, alongside a photo of the meeting.
This meeting follows another held a month earlier with a dozen business leaders—including billionaire Carlos Slim—to discuss the “Mexico Plan,” an 18-point strategy designed to reduce imports and boost domestic production.
On June 16, Sheinbaum also presented the “Mexico Plan” to members of the Canadian Business Council during her official visit ahead of the G7 Leaders Summit. That meeting aimed to build strategic partnerships with Canada’s private sector and promote Mexico as a reliable destination for foreign direct investment amid rising global tensions, particularly with the U.S.
Initially unveiled in early April, the “Mexico Plan” is the Sheinbaum administration’s response to Trump-era tariffs. The strategy outlines 18 key measures to strengthen national industry, boost investment, promote energy and food sovereignty, and replace imports with locally made products.
The plan is the centerpiece of the new government’s economic vision, aiming to align private investment with social development and sustainability goals, with the broader objective of positioning Mexico among the world’s top 10 economies.
