“What forces in the chancellery prevented an embassy from being established in the country where our independence came from? Was it because our freedom came from the black slaves who freed themselves?” the Colombian head of state is questioned on the social network X.

During his visit to the Caribbean country, Petro urged the countries of the region to avoid “slavery” and join the continent’s progressive nations, which he says constitute the majority. Petro emphasized that solidarity and cooperation are essential, describing them as a form of “love,” while loneliness leads to failure.

“The love for freedom, for democracy that makes us sail again (…) but our space is not only the Caribbean Sea, it is not only Haiti, nor Gran Colombia, it is all of humanity,” said the Colombian president.

The Haitian government stated yesterday that Petro’s visit would focus on security cooperation, training of armed forces and police, as well as strengthening institutional partnerships.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro met with Haitian Transitional Presidential Council Chairman Fritz-Alphonse Jean to discuss progress on bilateral projects, including the fight against drug trafficking, trade, education and security.

The meeting follows Petro’s proposal to the United States to collaborate with Colombia on a plan to build peace in Haiti, a country facing a serious crisis and an increase in violence, with a 24% increase in intentional homicides in the first six months of 2024.
