“The central objective of this change is to provide more facilities to the fans," Conmebol Pres. Alejandro Dominguez said.

Colombia and Argentina will jointly host the 2020 South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) as part of an initiative to unite both the north and south zones of the continent, officials said Tuesday.

"The teams from Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru, plus one of the invited teams, will form the Northern Zone and the teams from Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and one guest will form the Southern Zone," the Confederation said in a statement.

Conmebol President Alejandro Dominguez explained, “The central objective of this change is to provide more facilities to the fans and geographically bring the matches of the selections to the South American public."

"The fan will be able to enjoy at least five of his national team matches, which reinforces the spectacle and the sporting celebration," he said.

On Twitter, Colombian President Ivan Duque, wrote, “We are pleased with the very good news of the designation of Colombia, together with Argentina, as venues of the Copa América de Fútbol 2020. Another great achievement that unites us as a country, all our commitment to a successful tournament.”

However, some soccer aficionados are not so enthused.

During an interview with FM 94.9 in Bogota, Ernesto Lucena, the director of Coldeportes, noted that Argentina’s current economic state may provide some difficulties in delivering a successful international soccer convention.

"We believe that Argentina must accept that they have some difficulties that make the final… The economic situation, for no one is a secret, that a year from now, many factors must be consolidated so that people see the Copa America viable in Argentina," he said.

Others, like sports journalist Hernan Palaez, complained that- by sharing the honor- one of the two countries will be excluded from a vital part of the championship, not to mention the struggle posed for fans traveling to the event.

“We always copy of the Europeans, but they have very close distances, we do not," he said.

This will be Colombia's second time hosting the international event after taking the centennial tournament in 2001, while the coming championship will be Argentina's tenth.
