Medvedev also has served as the President of Russia between 2008 and 2012, with Vladimir Putin as Prime Minister.
Medvedev's leadership has focused on the “modernization,” and economic development of Russia, and the decision follows Putin's announcement of a strategic development plan to guide Russia's economic and technological progress through 2024. Medvedev had already spent the previous year working on the program.
“I consider it quite logical that this team will have to implement these plans,” Putin said.
The plan aims to make “the Russian Federation one of the five largest economies in the world,” before 2024,” according to the Kremlin. Technological development, pushing Russia's involvement in the high technology and digital sectors is a major focus, as the Putin administration seeks to fulfill its long-term goal of diversifying Russia's economy beyond oil.
The plan also includes efforts to raise living standards, reduce poverty in half, improve healthcare access, employment, education and housing.
Infrastructure projects are a major part of the roadmap laid out by the four-term president who was sworn in on Monday.
