An Ethiopian Airlines flight headed from Ethiopia's capital of Addis Abada toward Kenya has crashed killing all 157 people on the plane.

Ethiopian Airlines flight headed from Ethiopia's capital of Addis Abada headed to Nairobi, Kenya crashed mid-route Sunday, killing all 149 passengers and eight crew members on board.

Flight ET 302 crashed 62 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa near the city of Bishoftu, the airline announced in a statement released over its Twitter account. The vessel that went down was a Boeing 737-800 MAX.

The flight left Bole airport in Ethiopia's capital at 8:38 am local time when it lost contact with air control only minutes later at 8:44 am.

"The search and rescue operations are ongoing and we have no confirmed information about the survivors or possible victims," ​​the airline said in the official statement.

The airline added has listed several numbers on its Twitter page as a "passenger information center ... for family and friends of those who may have been on the flight." 

So far, Ethiopia Airlines has not provided of the cause of the crash.  

Prime Minister Abij Ahmed tweeted his condolences on "behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia ... to those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737."
