Mexico Receives World's Solidarity After Pipeline Blast Tragedy

"We are shocked by these events, by this tragedy and we want first of all to offer our deepest condolences," AMLO said.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) has arrived at the municipality of Tlahuelipan, in Hidalgo state, to respond to the crisis caused by a gas pipeline explosion on Friday that killed 67, injured 76 and left 65 people missing.

"We are shocked by these events, by this tragedy and we want first of all to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and inform them that the entire Government is with them," the president said at a press conference held in Tlahuelipan, Hidalgo.

President AMLO said that currently, the most pressing matter is to try and save the lives of the survivors as well as helping the families of the deceased. Adding that the government was committed to clarifying the facts, looking for the truth on what happened, and to assert justice. These words were reinforced by the Office of the Prosecutor, also present in the press conference.

The president was also firmly against the stealing and smuggling of gas (known as Huachicoleo) that is happening in Mexico, which generated the stealing in which the victims were participating. "We are not going to stop, we are going to eradicate this, which not only damages materially, it is not only what the nation loses by this illegal trade, black commerce, this black market of fuels, but the risk, the danger, the loss of lives human beings," stated AMLO.

"Our solidarity with President Lopez Obrador and the people of Mexico in these difficult times. We also express our condolences to the relatives of the victims of the explosion of a pipeline of Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex)."

Blaming previous governments for neglecting the population, AMLO stated that fuel theft had been a chronic problem for years and that the priority was to eradicate the social problems and lack of opportunities that had made people put their lives at risk.

Authorities and presidents of different countries have expressed their solidarity with the Government of Mexico and with the families of the victims of the explosion. The Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, thanked the 82 nations that have contacted Mexico to offer their help and solidarity.

Through official statements, the governments of Venezuela, Bolivia, Panama, Ecuador, El Salvador, Peru, among almost a 100 of other governments, have shown their solidarity with the Mexican government and its people.

"Government and people of Mexico deeply appreciate the signs of international solidarity, we have received calls from 82 countries to offer help and support on this day of sadness and mourning, our gratitude always," stated the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
