"So much pain... today a young person moved to come to this event lost their life at the hands of violent groups," President Daniel Ortega said.

At least one person has died and 27 have been injured during an attack against a caravan of Sandinista government supporters in Estelí traveling to Managua to attend a rally by President Daniel Ortega.

President Ortega spoke about the violence: "So much pain... today a young person moved to come to this event lost their life at the hands of violent groups."

The mayor of Estelí, Francisco Valenzuela, said the caravan of pro-government supporters was traveling through the region when an armed group attacked them, killing one and leaving 27 others in "serious condition."

Various opposition and student groups armed with mortars and pistols have blocked traffic as part of ongoing protests since April.

The protests were a response to proposed social security reforms which were later revoked by the government. The agenda has since switched to the removal of President Ortega.

Speaking on Nicaragua's Mother's Day, Ortega promised to restore peace: "Our greatest commitment and obligation for Nicaraguan mothers is to struggle and defend the peace that we all want," he said.

"We want peace for all Nicaraguan families. From those who have much and those who have little, we all have the same rights before God."
