On Saturday, a fuel tanker crashed into a vehicle in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing 50 people and inflicting burns on a further 100.
"According to witnesses and officials, villagers had rushed to collect the leaking fuel when it caught fire on Saturday," reported Al-Jazeera.
Atou Matubana Nkuluki, Deputy Governor of Kongo Central province, said that authorities were helping victims of the crash in the village of Mbuta, about 130km from the capital Kinshasa.
"We are mourning the death of about 50 people. There are also about 100 people with second-degree burns," Atou Matubana Nkuluki said. Officials were preparing actions to identify bodies and bury them, he added.
In 2010, at least 230 people were killed in DR Congo when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded, unleashing a fireball that tore through homes and cinemas packed with people watching World Cup soccer, Reuters reported.
