The multi-state broadcaster issued a statement mentioning some of its remarkable achievements during these 16 years and assessing the challenges ahead.

"teleSUR is a meeting point for millions around the world, who everyday place greater value on corroborated and truthful information, as opposed to the avalanche of lies and misrepresentation that flood the screens of users," teleSUR President Patricia Villegas noted.

Before the broadcaster emerged as an alternative to the mainstream media, outlets based in the U.S. and Europe offered information not covering Indigenous and social movements' struggles and demands.

The meme reads:

"From the streets of a protesting Brazil, this July 24, they remember the birth of Simon Bolivar and the birthday of
@teleSURtv."

teleSur has an audience of over 500 million viewers spread all over the world, and over 1.100 cable operators rebroadcast its programs. In these 16 years of existence, the multiplatform has offered news and analysis with a Latin-Caribbean lens.

The Tv station was an initiative of Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro and Commander Hugo Chavez, who saw how mainstream media disregarded social movements in the region.

After 16 years of hard work, teleSUR's voice has proven to be one of the most important tools for leftist movements, not only in LATAM and the Caribbean but worldwide.
