The US Justice Department is probing the actions of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) as part of its criminal investigation into alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
According to the report, which cites four people familiar with the matter, federal prosecutors are asking witnesses questions about meetings Trump led between December 2020 and January 2021, his plan to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence to block congressional certification of the election results, and any other instructions the former president may have given to aides about sending voters to states.
Prosecutors also have phone records of several key US officials and advisers in the Trump administration, including former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, the media outlet adds.
In addition, they are interviewing two top Pence advisers.
Earlier this week, four House committee members investigating the Jan. 6 riots on Capitol Hill asked the Justice Department to investigate Trump criminally.
