WNBA Players Reaffirm Black Lives Matter Support Despite Fines

The New York Liberty women's basketball team reaffirmed their support for Black Lives Matter Thursday, in the team's first game since they were fined by the WNBA for wearing t-shirts supporting the movement.

After the game against Indiana Fever, Liberty forward Tina Charles, awarded the WNBA player of the month, received the prize with her team-branded outfits turned inside out, saying she wanted to raise awarness about the Black Lives Matter movement.

During the press conference, the team warned they would refuse questions regarding basketball, but would be happy to discuss the movement.

“We feel like America has a problem with police brutality that’s going on with Black lives around here, and we just want to use our voices and use our platform to advocate for that,” said Wright in a statement.

“Just because someone says ‘Black Lives Matter’ doesn’t mean that other lives don’t matter. People put out this imaginary ‘Black lives only matter’ whenever people say, ‘Black lives matter.’ What we’re saying is, ‘Black lives matter, too.’ Period.”

“We really would appreciate if people stopped making our support of Black Lives Matter an issue that is so critical in our society right now, as us not supporting the police,” added Cash.

“There’s a lot of women in this room right now, in the WNBA, who have family members who are in law enforcement... People need to understand that it’s not mutually exclusive. You can support both things.”
