Prior to details surrounding the incident emerging, the blast caused panic across the country which had been rocked by Islamist violence in recent years.
Earlier this year, the Islam Party was denounced by Belgian politicians condemning the separation of men and women and stating that Sharia law violation of human rights.
The party aims to create an Islamic State and is hoping to win seats in Belgium's October municipal elections.
Witnesses said the 65-year-old veteran walked to the middle of an empty soccer pitch and blew himself up Tuesday. Authorities categorize the incident as suicide, stating the unnamed man committed the act out of despair.
