Venezuela has announced the closure of the nation's border with Colombia, citing serious and illegal threats to the sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic which have consistently been emanating from the neighboring country.

The bridges Simon Bolivar, Santander and Union, will be reopened "as soon as the gross acts of violence against our people and our territory are controlled," stated Vice President (VP) Delcy Rodriguez on her Twitter account.

"In demand of respect for elementary rules of international law, we call on Ivan Duque to cease its infamous actions and stop facilitating the territory of Colombia to attempt, following orders of Donald Trump against the right of the Venezuelans to live in peace and sovereignty" stated the Venezuelan Vice President.

The Bolivarian Government informs the population that, due to the serious and illegal threats attempted by the Government of Colombia against La Paz and the sovereignty of Venezuela, it has taken the decision of a temporary total closure of the Simón Bolívar, Santander and Unión bridges!

The securing of the border with Colombia comes days after Rodriguez announced the suspension of flights and closure of borders with the ABC islands - Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao - in response to interventionist threats to the South American country.

The Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has extended an invitation, to the opposition, to engage in restorative dialogue and resume diplomatic mechanisms.

VP Rodriguez has also repeatedly urged for unity among the Venezuelan people against interference threats, specifically to denounce Saturday's plan to violate the sovereignty of the country through illegal entry of aid.
