Arreaza met Guterres at the organization's headquarters in New York City at 12:30 p.m. local time.

At the meeting, the first between both officials, they discussed the country’s National Constituent Assembly as well as upcoming October regional elections. Arreaza reaffirmed the Venezuelan government’s commitment to uniting the country and overcoming political turmoil.

Guterres has openly supported talks between the government and the opposition and has opposed foreign intervention.

“Latin America has managed to get rid of both foreign intervention and authoritarianism, and that is a lesson that is very important to safeguard, concretely in Venezuela,” Guterres said.

The officials also discussed a territorial dispute over Essequibo, a territory bordering Guyana that Venezuela claims.
