The Venezuelan government said it was "anti-diplomatic" that the regional bloc had taken a strong political stance.

The delegation of Venezuela to the Organization of American States, OAS, criticized a text presented Thursday by the regional organization in which some of its members demand a recall referendum against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The Venezuelan ambassador to the OAS, Bernardo Alvarez, spoke during the weekly meeting of the Permanent Council and said the decision was an "anti-diplomatic procedure and absolutely irregular" for having been done "behind the back of the country in question."

"I just found out today, and through a tweet of a public statement by the U.S. Department of State, what a coincidence," he added.

The Canadian delegation read the joint statement after the U.S. published it on social media along with other members including Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

"Perhaps this is another proof of how divided the organization is, there is a desire to intervene in the internal affairs of Venezuela,” said Alvarez.
