Mexico won its first match 74-64 in the Centrobasket against Virgin Islands on Friday.
The match was the debut of both national teams in the tournament. Centrobasket 2014 is taking place in the Mexican state of Nayarit.
Both teams made mistakes and lost the ball during the game, but the Mexicans won the four quarters by partial scores of 14-12, 21-18, 19-15 and 20-19.
Mexican Francisco Cruz was the top scorer of the game with 20 points, followed by the Atlanta Hawks player Gustavo Ayon, who scored 12 points. The best scorer of Virgin Islands was Khalid Hart, with 11 points.
"We were a little nervous on the pitch and we lost some rebounds, but we played a good game with a solid defense, though we still have to improve," said the Spanish coach Sergio Valdeolmillos, who is in charge of Mexico's national team.
On the first day of Centrobasket, Puerto Rico defeated Bahamas 88-72, Cuba defeated Panama 71-63, and the current champion of the tournament, Dominican Republic, won 85-47 against Costa Rica.
The four top teams of Centrobasket will go on to the 2015 Olympic qualifying tournament, and the top three will directly participate in the Pan American games of the same year.
