Journalist Eva Golinger said Wednesday revelations of U.S. spying on Venezuela's state oil company are just the tip of the iceberg.
Speaking to teleSUR, Golinger explained Washington has been seeking to overthrow Venezuela's left-wing government for over a decade.
According to Golinger, the United States has invested “immense resources” into undermining the Venezuelan government, including through newly revealed espionage against state oil firm PDVSA.
“Obviously, this is a strategic interest of the United States,” she said.
Earlier in the day, a joint investigation by teleSUR and The Intercept found the U.S. National Security Agency had infiltrated PDVSA's internal communications network, and was spying on top company figures.

Golinger, who has researched U.S.-Venezuelan relations for years, said the “principle objective” of the United States in Venezuela was to roll back the advances of the Bolivarian revolution.

“They're financing the (political) opposition, they're … waging a media war against Venezuela … and they're penetrating institutions … to neutralize (the revolution) from within,” she said.
“Venezuela should denounce this grave violation of its sovereignty,” she added, noting the full magnitude of U.S. espionage still isn't clear.

“To what extent is the United States spying on Venezuela? Are they listening to the president's phone calls?” she asked. The comment appeared to allude to revelations from documents leaked by Edward Snowden that found U.S. intelligence agents were eavesdropping on German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Golinger continued by warning the United states isn't just plotting against Venezuela. Pointing to previously revealed U.S. spying against Brazilian oil company Petrobras, she said, “The United States has one objective … to retake control of … strategic resources in the (South American) region.”
