U.S. President Donald Trump has slumped to a new low in popularity ratings, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

According to researchers, 53 percent of the 1,291 participants – aged 18 to over 65 – disapprove of Trump's conduct and his handling of the presidency so far, making it the lowest percentage in over a year.

In questions relating to the president's strength of character, Trump received a positive response from the majority. However, a closer look shows participants felt his leadership, personality and behavior as a state administrator to be seriously lacking.

An overwhelming 67 percent said they felt Trump is a bad role model for children, 64 percent said he was not level-headed, 55 percent said the president lacks a sense of decency, and 59 percent say Trump does not share their values.

Over half of those surveyed said they don't believe Trump cares about the average American and are embarrassed to have him as their commander in chief.

Forty-two percent, just two percent more than on Trump's inauguration day, said they approve of his conduct and administration.

Other questions invited participants to weigh in on current U.S.-North Korea relations. This received considerable approval ratings, with the majority stating they believed the president would be able to ease political tensions between the U.S. and North Korea through diplomacy. Only sixteen percent said they believed it would require military force.

With the fall 2018 midterm elections approaching, participants were also asked their stance on party work and progress in Congress. Republicans received a disapproval rating of almost 70 percent, while Democrats weren't far behind with 63 percent.

An additional 49 percent said they hope Democrats win the majority of House Representatives, while 43 said the same of Republicans.

The poll was conducted via landlines and cell phones from March 16 to 20 and holds a margin of error plus-or-minus 3.3 points.
