U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have signed a post-work lunch document detailing several points agreed upon by the two leaders following talks which were held in Singapore.
According to multiple media reports, the document – which was shared with the media before the scheduled press conference – also mentioned that the United States has committed to "security guarantees" as well as promise to establish "new U.S.-DPRK (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea or North Korea) relations."
Kim Jong-un, in the document, has committed to the "complete denuclearization of Korean Peninsula." During the signing, Kim had said that the two have "decided to leave the past behind. The world will see a major change." Trump said he had formed a special bond with Kim also adding that the process of denuclearization would happen "very, very quickly."
The meeting was held at the Capella hotel on Singapore Sentosa Island.
Trump remarked that the talks with Kim had gone "better than anybody could have expected" and that he is "absolutely" willing to invite the North Korean leader to the White House.
Some of the points on the document include:
1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018, Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.
The document, according to CBS states that overcoming decades of tensions and hostility was a primary focus of the future relations between the two nations.
The details of the statement, which Trump inadvertently displayed to the press after the signing, was zoomed in on and reviewed by several media outlets.
