The sailors are currently using Lockheed Martin-built controllers, which are less elegant in design and demands a longer learning curve. They cost about $38,000.

According to an Engadget report, the Xbox controllers may also be used to manipulate laser weapons and other equipment.

The USS Colorado is scheduled to be outfitted with the popular gaming console's controllers when it is introduced to the fleet in November.

The U.S. Navy plans to use the Xbox 360 controllers primarily for operating the periscopes aboard its newer submarines.

Fox 5 news cited a Virginian-Pilot report which stated that the Navy's Virginia-class subs will replace the traditional rotating periscope with high-resolution cameras and large monitors.

The report added that the Navy is eager to integrate the X-box controller because it is more familiar to younger sailors.
