US Election: Democrats Take House

The Democrats have emerged victorious with regards to control of the House in the U.S. mid-term elections, according to AFP.

According to AFP, At last count, Democrats had gained a net 14 of the 23 Republican-held seats needed to capture a majority.

With a House majority, Democrats will have the power to investigate Trump’s tax returns as well as his involvement with the governments of North Korea, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. 

Furthermore, they will possibly look-into President Trump's decision to deploy thousands of army officials to the U.S.-Mexico border as a protective measure, despite Trump's comments last week that, "They want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back. ... I told them to consider it a rifle. When they throw rocks like they did at the Mexico military police, I say: Consider it a rifle."

Trump was forced to backtrack on those comments after the Nigerian army took his comments as verbatim when they shot Shi'ite Muslim protesters earlier in the week, with an estimated 40 people killed.

In what was a surprise move, President Trump called House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tonight to congratulate her for winning the House, her chief of staff, Drew Hammill, tweeted.

"He acknowledged the leader’s call for bipartisanship in her victory remarks," Hammill said.

History was made when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, became the youngest woman elected to Congress in US history, representing New York's 14th congressional district.

Elsewhere, Liberal Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren were re-elected, with Sanders earlier claiming he'd decide after the midterms whether to run for Office. 

Ayanna Pressley became the first black member from Massachusetts, while Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar became the first Muslim congresswomen, representing Michigan and Minnesota respectively.

Jared Polis became the first openly gay man elected governor when he declared victory in his bid for governor of Colorado. 

Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland became the first Native American congresswomen when they declared victory in Missouri and New Mexico, while Marsha Blackman, Janet Mills, and Abby Finkenauer emerged victorious as the first female senator, governor, and congresswoman in Tennessee, Maine, and Iowa, respectively. 

Along with his tweet to Nancy Pelosi, President Trump tweeted his support for the Republican party, stating "tremendous success tonight. Thank you to all" with regards to the Republican party's control of the Senate.
